Supermarket own-brand wine frequently 'best in the world' and just £6.99 a bottle

It's the world’s most carefully judged wine competition, with masters of wine tasting everything at least three times, and this year it was the supermarket own brands that walked away winners.

The International Wine Challenge awarded 498 own-brand and supermarket-exclusive wines medals, with 33 own-brand wines winning gold.

“We have never awarded so many medals to own-brand wines before, which demonstrates the vast improvement in supermarket ranges.

"It is fantastic that supermarkets are offering such extensive ranges of different styles and that UK shoppers can get top quality wine on their doorstep,” said IWC Co-Chairman Charles Metcalfe.

“Serve any one of these medal winners to your friends and family and they are guaranteed to be blown away.”

produced the biggest number of winners, with 12 gold medal winning wines, along with 52 silvers and 102 bronze medals. was second with five golds, 22 silvers and 48 bronze medals; and both picked up four golds, won three, and won two golds each and picked up one.

Along with the reds, whites and sherry's and ports – supermarkets also won prizes for Champagne, with budget bubbles beating more expensive names when the judges blind taste-tested them.

Tesco finest* Vintage Grand Cru Champagne 2007 – – the best performing own-brand champagne.

The prize for the cheapest wine on the list went to Aldi, with it's winning gold for the budget retailer.
