We’ve all heard of the London neighbourhoods out of reach of any normal human being.
But a study by Shelter has revealed the problem is wider than Kensington and Chelsea - one in ten areas of England has no homes for sale that are affordable at all.
The researchers found just 43 affordable family homes listed in London - and those included houseboats.
But it wasn’t just the capital. Cambridge, St Albans and Watford all had no affordable homes with at least two bedrooms. In total, 35 local authorities had no affordable family homes.
And worse, house prices are still edging upwards, according to the latest Nationwide house price index. Prices were 1% higher in April than March, and 5.2% higher than April last year - that's the biggest monthly rise since June last year.
If you’re looking for a family home, you’re most likely to find one in the north east of England, followed by the north west and Yorkshire and the Humber.
Big cities with affordable homes include Birmingham, where one in four homes are affordable, Newcastle (one in three), Manchester (one in four) and Leeds (one in four).

Of course, you can’t just ditch your job to move to a mansion in County Durham.
If you’re living in the unaffordable South East or London, you can try hopping a couple of miles for a better chance of buying a home.
In London, your best bet is Bexley, where 2.7% of family homes are affordable (we know).
Move out to the commuter belt, and you’re more likely to find an affordable home - in Southend-on-Sea, Peterborough, Medway and Gosport at least one in ten homes are affordable.

Shelter's researchers imagined a family buying for the first time, where one partner worked full time and the other part time. In total, this family earned £30,748 a year.
They then worked out the typical mortgage a family like this could take out with an average 17% deposit.
