8 types of old toy that could now be worth a fortune

A million pounds might be under your bed. Or in your parent’s cupboard. Or your kids are throwing it around. Well it WAS a million pounds - until they dropped it.

With Star Wars , we asked Jordan Hembrough - a toy dealer and star of Quest TV show Toy Hunter - what you should be looking for to separate the jewels in your old toy box from the junk.

You really want to start looking for toys that resonate with people. It is all about popular culture. The reason toys are worth so much as they are is being able to make that connection between the financial and the emotional.

Materials can be relevant. Tin toys from the turn of the last century are still very much in demand. Tin toys even from the 1920s are in demand.

I have a lot of people coming to me with porcelain dolls from the 1920s but they are not all going to be worth money. They need to be a famous maker. These include Louis Marx, Madame Alexander and Schylling.


It really is guesswork when it comes to sports players. if the player goes on to become one of the greats, a sports card could be worth a lot of money. Conversely, if he goes on to tragedy it can be worth money too - like an OJ Simpson card.

Could I find you a fortune?

You want to go back to the classics, and the characters that are timeless. It is not uncommon to find comics going for $10,000, $20,000, $30,000.

Everyone is going for the golden age - the 1920s. The silver age is the 1940s. These are the decades when the comics started coming out.

In the US, turntables and stereos are coming back. The Nintendo game . Some of the first gaming consoles go for $1,000 .


Tony the Tiger, Weetabix, the old cartoons - people collect the boxes. It brings back happy memories. Gifts from the cereal boxes may be valuable too. Original cornflakes boxes sell for a few hundred dollars. Here's .


Some of the sets are worth lots of money. Look for individual boxes that are not made anymore.

An old toy is not necessarily valuable - it could just be old. So don't be disappointed if the only person who will take your toys is the charity shop.

“You don’t have to have a lot of cash to get into it but you have got to realise it is not foolproof,” Hembrough pointed out. “You can lose money too.”
